The painting “Turning Road” is an attempt to travel the well-worn path of Fauvism — heating the tree trunks glowing red along a winding village road — and to disappear around the bend, in search of new inspiration.

– Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)

What is the painting about?

The Fauvist technique, with its vivid, saturated colors and energetic brushstrokes, amplifies the sense of movement and emotional intensity, imbuing the work with vibrancy and momentum. Impression of the painting

“Turning Road” captures a compelling moment of transition — both physical and metaphorical. Anatoli Gostev seems to be documenting not only the gnarled tree trunks and the landscape but also the very process of movement — the journey along the road of life.

The glowing red tree trunks may symbolize not just warmth and light, but also passion, intensity, and the emotional tension of venturing into the unknown. The winding path may reflect the twists and turns of life, the challenges and opportunities awaiting just beyond the bend.

The road disappearing into the horizon evokes a sense of anticipation, highlighting the idea of potential — of new inspiration, new adventures, and discoveries. What lies beyond the bend? A view of the sea and mountains? A person? A meeting?

The artist takes the answers with him as he disappears around the bend — into eternity — leaving the viewer free to interpret. One thing is certain: in the space with this painting, there will always be a place where you can turn off onto a quiet, sun-drenched winding road.

History of the painting and exhibition

The artist completed the painting in 2017. It may have been inspired by his earlier travels through the Balkans and Spain.

The painting was exhibited at ART Climate Change | 13.09 - 8.10.2021 hosted by Novum Investments in Basel, Switzerland, where Anatoli Gostev was featured as a special honorary guest. The curators discussed the symbolic role of climate change in contemporary art. Gostev, however, was puzzled by the supposed connection between his work and climate issues, and declined to sell his paintings in Switzerland.
