Spring always marks the arrival of something new and the cleansing of what is old and unnecessary. A man with a cart carries away the remnants of the past, while a woman looks with hope toward the red road and the awakening landscape on a still-chilly morning. Winter retreats, giving way to color and new hopes.

– Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)

Painting of Hope

Only hope can save us from loneliness and despair—hope for connection, love, warmth, and embrace. From this hope and anticipation, strength is born. Hope and anticipation are at the heart of Gostev's painting “Red Road.”

The man removing the remnants of the past and the woman gazing hopefully into the future create a contrasting image symbolizing the shift from the old to the new. The Red Road she looks toward represents not just the change of seasons but the path to new possibilities. The awakening landscape and crisp morning air highlight a sense of energy and freshness, bringing into the painting a feeling of renewal and the promise of new beginnings. The painting “Red Road” stands as a symbolic representation of spring’s arrival and a new beginning—a reflection on the essence of spring.

History of the Painting

The first version of “Red Road” was painted by the artist in 2007. By late 2009, sixteen of Gostev’s works were on permanent display at K-Galerie im Maxforum in Munich. Following a stroke, gallery owner Klaus Uchtmann became incapacitated, and his son Olaf hastily shut the gallery down. During the liquidation process, twelve of Gostev’s paintings vanished. Among the missing or stolen works was the first version of “Red Road.”

After mourning the loss, Gostev repainted “Red Road” along with several other missing works—differently, and far better. He overcame regret not through searching but through the quality of his new brushwork.

Emotional Connection

Anatoli Gostev had a particular fondness for this painting, as if he foresaw the coming of spring within it. He painted it slowly, completing it in 2014, yet continued making adjustments until 2021, each time savoring the process and the anticipation of his favorite season. Speaking about the work, Gostev reflected on the emotional connection:

When we speak of nature, we must not forget that we are part of it, and we should absorb the feelings it inspires with curiosity, just as we would study a person close to us—because there is a bond between us and the rest of the world.

Working with Sensation

Following his journey to the birthplace of the “Blue Rider” movement—Murnau by Lake Staffelsee—the artist experienced what he called a shift: from copying nature to feeling its essence, abstracting, and conveying the extract of emotion. Continuing this approach in “Red Road,” he described his method:

My method is simple—I put the idea for a painting aside for six months. I paint Winter in Summer, Spring in Autumn. Six months are enough to filter the sensation. My choice of color and composition doesn’t rely on any theory—it’s based on observation, feeling, and memory. I’m inspired by the sensation of spring’s arrival and the pure colors of awakening nature, aiming for an intensity of impression that creates the painting itself.

The pursuit of intensity by nature disregards realism, focusing and amplifying the essence—that is what drives the creation of paintings full of balance and purity.

Exhibition Participation

In 2021, the painting “Red Road” was featured at the ART Climate Change exhibition by Novum Investments in Basel, Switzerland, where Anatoli Gostev was a special guest of honor.
