History of the Painting.
The creation of the original version of the painting "By the Window" was halted by the artist in 2013. The seemingly finished portrait of the fifth wife was set aside by the master painter with a restrained note on the author's website:
A portrait of a woman in a world of balance between good and bad, highlighted by light and shadow in the window. The woman knows this, she reflects on her path in life, seemingly avoiding dogmas in her thoughts.
- Anatoli Gostev
From time to time, Gostev would take out the painting as if to work on it, but after looking at it, he did not make any significant changes. It was as if he was waiting to see which way the balance would tip.
The Balkan Rift.
In Gostev's biography, it is mentioned that after a trip to the Balkans in 2015, a rift would occur in his relationship with his wife, and upon returning home, they would live under the same roof as neighbors. Soon they would sell their home near Warsaw and buy another. The hope for a change in scenery and relationships would fail. The relationship would turn into open mutual hostility and reproaches, and the artist would not touch the portrait again until his death.
Last Modifications to the Portrait.
The portrait "By the Window" was repainted by the artist a few weeks before his death, due to personal reflections on his wife who had long betrayed and hated him. In his final message, the artist removed the mirror of the soul - the eyes - from the painting, transforming the portrait of the once woman into a portrait of the dead. The end of balance loss and one of Anatoli Gostev's last messages.
