The entire composition is meant to move in a circle, like a winter round dance. From pitch-black night, through a warm home, to two old women with a lost goat.

– Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)

Impression of the Painting

The painting "Whose Goat?" is the result of a long compositional process. The theme of the winter landscape revolves around two women among farmsteads in a Godforsaken place and a lost goat, which becomes the subject of the dispute depicted by the artist.

Creation of the Painting

The idea for the painting emerged in 2001 under the original title "My Goat, Your Goat." In 2002, the work was exhibited at the German gallery K Galerie im Maxforum München until an incident occurred in which it was nearly lost. When the painting miraculously returned to the artist in 2011, he began to rework it.

Completion of the Work

The painting was completely rewritten by the artist by 2021. It was no longer exhibited, as the artist continued working on it up to 2021 and even informally changed its title. In a way, the evolution of the painting reflects the development of the maestro’s vision of his own art. The painting’s destiny—just like its characters’—is phantasmagorical.
