Over a quarter of a century ago, in the heart of a harsh winter, I was driving home. On both sides stretched a dense forest, its snow-covered trees frozen into a solid, icy mass. As the car exited the edge of the woods, the headlights suddenly lit up a moonlit, surreal clearing with a solitary tree — as if sinking into the meaninglessness of isolation and chilling emptiness. I asked the driver to stop and walked through the crisp snow toward the Tree.
You see, the trees in the forest stood together, as if supporting one another in this freezing battle. But the tree in the clearing had survived, as though through some inner superpower — so unfathomable it defies expression in words. I had no choice but to start painting. The painting — the Tree within it — has, for many years, made me marvel at its strength and continually tempted me to alter its details.
Somewhere far away, in a clearing on the forest's edge, my favorite Tree continues to age in solitude each winter. I go to the studio, mix titanium white with ultramarine, and with a palette knife — make a stroke.
I know for certain that the nearby forest will vanish without a trace — but this Tree will live forever.
– Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)
The Story of the Painting
The creation of the allegorical painting “The Last Tree” began in 1988 and was completed by the artist only in the winter of 2021 — due to his passing. “The Last Tree” stands as a symbol of unyielding vitality. Throughout his life, Anatoli Gostev made ongoing changes to the painting.
A 33-Year Self-Portrait
The painting “The Last Tree” can truly be seen as an allegorical self-portrait of the artist. Through this image, Anatoli Gostev expresses his own resilience and steadfastness in the face of life’s hardships. Like the lonely tree in the clearing, the artist continued to create — despite every barrier and trial life presented.
Anatoli Gostev dedicated 33 years to the creation of this work. It is a testament to his perseverance and devotion to art. The painting becomes a symbol not only of survival and inner strength but also of the artist’s deep inner world, his ongoing pursuit of excellence and understanding of the world around him.
The canvas carries strong emotional and visual impact. Gostev conveys a sense of harsh loneliness and cold emptiness through his use of cold blues and whites. These tones emphasize the icy atmosphere and deepen the drama of the scene. The composition, centered around the solitary tree in the clearing, draws the eye and evokes admiration and respect for its strength.
The Meaning and Symbolism of the Painting
Rare video footage remains of the artist working on this piece. After his passing, two of his easels were left untouched — one holding “The Last Tree”, and the other, “The Last Ship.” This stunning painting is one of the most significant works by Anatoli Gostev, who devoted his life to art.
Exhibition Participation
Anatoli Gostev left a remarkable imprint on Western European painting. Critics called him "the last artist to embody the legacy of the great masters." The painting “The Last Tree” was a central piece in the ART Climate Change exhibition | 13.09 – 8.10.2021, Novum Investments in Basel, Switzerland, under the patronage of the Order of Malta.
The Power of the Last Artist
The use of cold tones and a stark winter setting reflects not only the physical environment but also an inner struggle that every person may face. Yet despite the harshness of the surroundings, the tree stands firm — just like the artist himself, who never gave in to adversity.
The work can be interpreted as a reflection of Anatoli Gostev’s personal and creative strength. It symbolizes not only his ability to overcome life's hardships, but also his deep connection to art, which served as a source of inspiration and strength throughout his life.
“The Last Tree” is not only technically masterful, but emotionally profound. It invites the viewer to reflect on resilience and inner power — both essential for surviving the harshest of conditions. The canvas absorbs and radiates a strength unlike anything else, a force that reaches and fills the soul of the viewer.
There are many interpretations of “what is strength?”. Strength is strength itself — nothing more. In this case, the strength of the Tree — the strength of the Artist.
