Pancake Seller – cubism
The painting "Pancake Seller" – a modern work in the style of cubism, a chromatic experiment of introducing warmth into bitter frost. Years created: 2001–2021
Size: Height: 50 cm Width: 60 cm
I don’t think Picasso and Braque invented Cubism — you can see similar attempts in cave paintings thousands of years ago. But they organized it well as a movement — it all comes down to simple geometric forms. Simplicity. There’s nothing more complex than simplicity.
- Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)
Painting in the Cubist Style
The painting "Pancake Seller" is executed in the style of Cubism. The central theme reflects on the contrast between the cold of winter and the warmth of hot pancakes sold by a woman in the frosty outdoors. Working with simplified forms, the artist didn’t plunge the scene into abstraction. The objects in the painting are clearly recognizable. It feels as though only the vendor’s hot pancakes can protect one from the bitter frost.
Creation of the Painting
The concept for the painting emerged in 2001, and the artist continued working on it until 2021, experimenting with new shapes and colors as if it were a design project. A creative, experimental canvas exploring Cubism, color theory, and form — more a visual meditation than a final statement.
The painting was not considered finished by the artist in his own sense. To his credit, every one of his canvases could be considered complete at any stage. "Pancake Seller" was never exhibited and remained in the artist's studio until his death in 2022. For Gostev, the creative process itself was a study in atmosphere and temperature.
