Inspiration for the Painting
Reflections on the motives behind the creation of the painting, in the words of the artist Anatoli Gostev:
The painting was inspired by the everyday lives of people who return home after a long day of work, nestling close to one another and sharing their thoughts. It reflects the evening conversations of river barges navigating the canals of a colorful city — talking about the cargo they’ve carried and the distances they’ve traveled throughout the day.
- Anatoli Gostev
Story Behind the Painting
The creation of “Sleeping Barges” was completed by the artist in 2012 — during a period of renewed artistic understanding, when form and color began to replace literary elements in Gostev's painting. Even after the formal completion of the work in 2012, Gostev returned to it multiple times for revisions. This was his method: to set the painting aside and revisit it when a clearer sense of refinement emerged.
Impression of the Painting
The entire composition seems to move in a circle, gently guiding the viewer’s gaze to the quiet dock of weary barges. “Sleeping Barges” fills the space with a sense that the day’s work is done and has not been in vain.
The painting reflects the influence of great Fauvist masters — André Derain and Max Pechstein — infused with hints of Monet’s impressionism, seen in the shimmering water near the moored barges. However, the vivid palette is deliberately restrained, and the wild expressiveness of Fauvism is absent — the color range fully conveys a sense of calm and rest after the day's events.
Last Exhibition
The painting was exhibited at ART Climate Change | 13.09 – 08.10.2021, hosted by Novum Investments in Basel, Switzerland, shortly before the artist’s passing. He was invited as an honorary guest. European critics referred to Gostev as “The last painter to embody the legacy of the great masters.”
The process of creating art through introspection and emotion held the greatest meaning in his life as the last true painter. Anatoli Gostev created a body of work with a distinctive and unmatched style.
