Lake – an image of Paradise on the verge of abstraction
The landscape painting “Lake” is an inexhaustible transformation of nature. Paradise within the artist’s reach, where everything is possible. Inspired by the Staffel Lake in the foothills of the Alps.
Year of creation: 2013.
Size: Height: 81 cm Width: 97 cm
I will continue working on it, but at every stage, the painting must be complete.
- Anatoli Gostev
Impression of the Painting
The painting "Lake" is an unfinished masterpiece of contemporary art. The landscape is inspired by Lake Staffelsee, nestled in the Alpine foothills—an area that stirred Anatoli Gostev due to its significance as the birthplace of "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider), where his great predecessors worked: Kandinsky and the German artist Gabriele Münter, Alexej von Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin, Franz Marc and August Macke, Paul Klee and Heinrich Campendonk. It was here that the first painting in the series, “Lake of Encounters,” was created.
Over the years, there has been a metamorphosis of reinterpretation and simplification in his painting, accompanied by a strange energy radiating from this inspiring, creativity-filled place. A kind of paradise, where all forms and colors are possible. The feeling the painting conveys is that the landscape is alive, with ongoing events unfolding within it. It captures the dynamic energy of nature and its tireless transformation.
Creating the Painting
The artist began working on the landscape “Lake” in 2013. In the final studio photo from 2015, we see the painting taking shape. Despite the expressive brushwork, Gostev approached the work with care, infusing it with the essence of impressions and memories of the surroundings of Lake Staffelsee. He worked with pauses in time, as if allowing the emotions to mature before being fully understood and expressed on canvas.
Completion of the Painting
At 1:03 in the video, a fragment of the painting from 2015 can be seen in the artist’s studio. The work was never exhibited, as the artist continued working on it until 2021—relishing the evolution of the narrative and the forms within the landscape. In a sense, the painting was complete at every stage of its journey.
