Two Ships – a painting with a rediscovered destiny
The painting “Two Ships” is an allegory of friendship and loyalty in painting. Having found its own destiny, the painting did not reach the USA but traveled to Russia to save a life. Year of creation: 2021.
Size: Height: 50 cm Width: 60 cm
For if one falls, the other will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls and has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And if someone overpowers one, two can resist him.
- Ecclesiastes, Chapter 4 — The Bible
About the painting — loyalty and support.
The work is boldly executed, capturing the storm’s dynamic energy. The storm casts a haze over the space, muting the color palette and muffling the hues of the ships. In the painting, two ships raise their storm flags and face the elements together, tightly pressed against one another. “Two Ships” is, of course, a symbol of love, friendship, and mutual support. The nature of these feelings is so unique and inexplicable that they seem to breathe soul into objects. Look at the ships — they are ALIVE. And so, the painting found its destiny.
The story of the painting.
The painting “Two Ships” was completed by the artist in 2021 and was initially intended to be sent to the USA alongside another work. But fate had other plans — the painting was sent to Russia as a gift to a friend of the artist’s son, with the noble purpose of saving a life.
The painting “Two Ships” will bring to its future owner, a doctor, a sense of love and mutual support. It will fulfill its purpose. Gostev’s paintings are filled with such emotional power that they are capable of influencing destinies.
Giving life to ships.
The theme of ships runs through Gostev’s art as a metaphor for animation. The ships in the painting “Gotland” admire the sea, the “Sleeping Barges” rest after a long day’s labor, in “The Pier” two ships engage in conversation, while the mural on the house represents his own ship — his life — and at the same time, “The Last Ship” of the greatest master of bringing objects to life.
