When we began working in Cubism, we had no intention of creating Cubism itself—we simply expressed what was inside us.

- Pablo Picasso

Impression of the Painting

The painting “Magpie” is created in a Cubist style with a restrained color palette. Its theme is a reflection on the sensation of winter through simplified forms. Despite its contemporary nature, the artist did not push the narrative into full abstraction. The objects on the canvas maintain clear meaning—right at the edge of recognition. One can feel the crisp, sunlit winter, the warmth of sunlight streaming into the house, and, of course, the curious magpie peeking out from behind the patchwork quilt of figurative language.

Creation of the Painting

The idea for the painting emerged in 2002, but the artist continued working on it until 2021, fine-tuning form and color like musical notes. It represents another experiment in absorbing the Cubist legacy, reducing objects to the threshold of narrative understanding.

The Painting’s Fate

The painting was never finished in the artist’s own perception. To his credit, all of his canvases can be considered complete at any stage. “Magpie” was never exhibited and remained in the artist’s studio until his passing in 2022.

For Gostev, the creative process behind this work was also an exploration of the figurative language of early 20th-century Cubism.
