The desire to reinterpret the legacy of Cubism’s pioneers—Juan Gris, Georges Braque, and to some extent Picasso—as a rejection of painterly freedom and excessive literariness on the canvas, led to a combination of various objects assembled into a single composition. It was an attempt to enter the world of ordinary things and to break away from the ingrained imagery of Socialist Realism—a return to basic geometric forms. Through this play with form, the objects gain new emotional meaning, reaching back to the origins of ancient civilizations' art.

The concept of “replacing reality,” developed by the great Cubist masters, asserts that the painting itself is the real object, and the artist’s task is to organize and construct the painting independently of the depicted subject, which may be distorted and reimagined beyond recognition. “The painting should not conform to the object — the object should conform to the painting,” said Juan Gris.

The greatest challenge is always to ensure that, despite the abstraction of the objects it contains, the painting retains its charm and brings clarity to the viewer’s inner world.

– Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)

Impression of the Painting

This Cubism-inspired still life brings a sense of balance and simplicity into the interior. The depicted objects mystically become part of the painting’s owner, boldly asserting the right of the table, fruits, bottle, and dishes to exist under their own geometric laws. The table and its elements are so firmly embedded in the fabric of the universe that even if the world wavers, the composition will not shift an inch.
