The Simple Plot of the Painting.
The painting "Autumn Cat" is lyrical. It captures the poetic mood of late autumn, like Joseph Kosma's melody "Autumn Leaves." Leisureliness, the last bright colors. The pensive woman cleaning leaves around the artist’s unfinished statue is interrupted by a bird flying towards her. Watching everything is an autumn cat, already hiding in anticipation of the cold.
The Idea Behind the Painting.
The idea for the subject emerged in 2001, representing another version of the painting sold at a solo exhibition at Atelier Buckenmaier Überlingen, Germany.
By 2020, the artist completely rethought his understanding of painting, repainting the work with a narrowed palette and a changed composition. The bird and the woman remained in place. He noted the beauty of the simple plot as the reason for revisiting the work in a different way.
The Fate of the Painting.
The work was not completed by Gostev in his own understanding. However, to the artist's credit, it should be said that the very hint of continuation left to us gives the painting charm, leaving room for the viewer's imagination. Everyone knows the continuation of the melody "Autumn Leaves," paused, mentally interpreting the notes.
The painting "Autumn Cat" never participated in exhibitions and remained in the artist’s studio until his passing in 2022.
