Paul Klee — Gallery of the Artist’s Works from 1905 to 1940

The more horrifying this world becomes, the more abstract art becomes.

- Paul Klee (1879 - 1940)

Paul Klee Paul Klee was one of the most prominent representatives of European avant-garde, expressionism, and abstract art. His works were distinguished by deep symbolism, refined color harmony, and musicality of forms. Even among Bauhaus artists, Klee stood out for his philosophical approach and individual style.

In his painting, fine art, music, and poetry merge, creating a world of metaphors and images. While connected to the major artistic movements of his time, Paul Klee remained a distinctive master whose work defies strict classification. He boldly experimented with techniques, developed his own version of pointillism—paintings constructed from pulsating colored squares—and dreamed of painting as a living organism, growing like a plant. His goal was to express movement and inner energy with minimal means. Yet, Klee rarely ventured into pure abstraction: his art was always an attempt to see a tangible object from within and from all sides, capturing and conveying its deeper essence.

Throughout his life, Paul Klee created over 9,000 works of painting and graphics.

We have selected for publication over 100 paintings created by Klee between 1905 and 1940 for several reasons:

  • This period covers both the artist’s formative years and his maturity, showcasing the full range of his creative explorations.
  • The works reflect key themes of the era: spirituality, the inner world of humanity, and the search for harmony.
  • The paintings possess high aesthetic and investment value—an art that continues to inspire and amaze.

Gostev’s: Evaluation of Paul Klee’s Painting

Evaluating the painting of Paul Klee, relying on our own judgments, sense of taste, and the emotional impact of his art, we highlight several works by the creator of metaphors. Through his work, Paul Klee affirmed his own statement:

Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see.

With curiosity, discovering ourselves through Klee’s art, we select four remarkable works by the artist:

The Influence of Paul Klee’s Art and Metaphors

Anatoli Gostev was inspired by the master’s color harmonies, as Klee believed that art should express not the external world, but inner reality. Borrowing three birds of hope from Klee for his final fresco, Gostev once said:

I am 75, and on the side wall of a barn I painted this message of mine... It is my message to loved ones and friends. Three birds of hope watch my ship, but the mast is already broken, and on the torn sail — a great poem by Marina Tsvetaeva (in my English interpretation).

— Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)
