Marc Chagall — Gallery of soul’s shades

If I create from the heart, almost everything works; if from the head, then almost nothing.

- Marc Chagall (1887–1985)

Marc Chagall Marc Chagall is the purest artist. "Be like children" – this is about him, the eternal child, naive, otherworldly, blessed, kissed by God.

The Gostev's Dynasty values painting not for the image, but for the pure and clear emotion embedded in the canvas. You can create a bas-relief cast from gold weighing a ton, but would it be more valuable than a small canvas imbued with the artist's SOUL? In every painting by Chagall, the image is pure. No camera will ever be invented to capture the imagery born in the artist's soul.

During his long, God-blessed life, Mark Zakharovich gifted the world a legacy of pure emotions – over 1,000 works of true art with millions of shades of his soul, experiences, and reflections. It is futile to analyze his paintings, apply terms of styles or movements, or decipher their meaning. Chagall’s art must be seen and felt.

We look, and we see a sea of stones. We peer closer, searching for the pearls of essence. The Gostev's Dynasty is delighted to present a selection of works by Marc Chagall, divided into three parts: bouquets, lyricism, and violins.

Gallery of Marc Chagall's Paintings - Bouquets

The theme of bouquets first appeared in Chagall's life in 1909 when he met his future wife, Bella. "It was Bella who brought me my first flower... We can talk endlessly about the meaning of flowers, but for me, they symbolize life itself. Necessity," the artist wrote. The blooming bouquets bring a shade called "Life" to Chagall's paintings. Fragments of existence adorned with the fleetingness of flowers seem to say: cherish every moment.

Gallery of Marc Chagall's Paintings - Lyricism

Is it surrealism, expressionism, or folk art? critics ask. It is simply the lyricism of Marc Chagall's life, illustrations of the book of existence. Chagall is a storyteller. He narrates fantastical scenes of life, filtering them through his childlike heart, without pondering compositional or coloristic rules, placing on the canvas stories from the realm of feelings and dreams. This is the essence of his mastery. Often, angels appear in his paintings: if marriages are made in heaven, then in Chagall's work, heaven descends to bless lovers.

Gallery of Marc Chagall's Paintings - Violins

A special place in Marc Chagall’s work is occupied by violins and violinists. The violin is a delicate instrument. The violin always resonates in unison with the strings of the human soul. Chagall's violinists play the melodies of life, the violin seems to emerge from the clouds, and the souls of lovers harmonize as one melody. In our gallery of Marc Chagall, we have highlighted paintings where the master depicted violins or violinists, emphasizing the significance of this allegory.

Evaluation of Marc Chagall’s Painting Masterpieces

Marc Chagall’s art is like a literary work. Each painting is a constantly changing story, where lines appear and disappear, and pages replace one another. Lyrical poetry in painting. One of the dynasty’s statements says:

One must suffer a painting into existence.

It is impossible to evaluate the purity of thought and emotion in his works — everything within them is in constant motion. Continuously discovering something new in each Chagall painting, relying on our own judgments and criteria, a sense of taste and the emotional impact of the great master of lyrical painting, we select four masterpieces about a sorrowful Jewish melody of the God-kissed Marc:

The Influence of Chagall's Art

During his travels, Anatoli Gostev visited Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the grave where the great lyricist of painting rests. Later, his painting, "The Night Violinist," became a tribute to Marc Chagall. Here is what he wrote about it:

Sleeping houses and fences – simple and eternal structures, buried under night snow, and beyond, no one, just the moon gliding over the horizon.
Chagall could understand what this violinist is thinking – listening to how he plays the violin. What difference does it make whether it’s good or bad!
You can only touch the bow to the violin and listen to the unsounded music. The violinist plays... I smile, touching his violin with a brush, poking a palette knife into his hat or right at his nose.
The violinist plays...
The moon freezes in the night sky, and the coolness of the night flows into my slightly open mouth.
