Childhood and Youth

Henri Charles Manguin (23 March 1874 – 25 September 1949) was born in Paris. He grew up in the cultural atmosphere of the French capital, showing an early interest in painting and drawing. Manguin's childhood coincided with a period of rapid change in French art, where the influence of Impressionism further fueled his creative drive. His family supported his artistic inclinations, allowing him to begin formal training at an early age.

Adolescence and Path to Art

In his youth, Manguin enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts, where he became a student of Gustave Moreau, one of the most influential teachers of his time. In Moreau’s studio, he met Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Charles Camoin and other future Fauves. These connections, along with trips to the Mediterranean, shaped his vibrant color palette and free painting style. By the early 20th century, Manguin had become a prominent representative of the new movement later called Fauvism.

Career

Manguin's first exhibition took place at the Salon des Indépendants in 1902. His works immediately attracted attention due to their bold colors and joyful, sunny mood. In 1905, he participated in the famous Salon d’Automne, where critics first used the term “Fauves.” Manguin became known as a master of light, female portraits, and Mediterranean landscapes. Over the following decades, he exhibited regularly in Paris, worked in the south of France, and earned a lasting reputation as one of the most lyrical Fauves.

Later Years and Death

In his later years, Manguin continued to work productively, drawing inspiration from nature and family scenes. He mainly lived in the south of France, painting serene and harmonious compositions, remaining true to his recognizable style. Henri Charles Manguin passed away on 25 September 1949 in Saint-Tropez. His legacy holds an important place in the history of French Modernism, and his paintings continue to be highly valued at international auctions.
