Looked out the window and felt a quiet sadness. I saw that winter was near. My landscape from my own window, the one I cherish. And what a sky…

- Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)

Impression of the Painting

A painting of autumn melancholy and the onset of winter. From the artist’s window and the spacious terrace of his house, one beholds enchanting, picturesque hills and fields. The artist searched for this house, bought it, and invested his soul in it. He loved this place and the view from the window, for which he refused to hang curtains. The last house, the last painter, the last autumn.

This little picture is deeply touching to me. I step out onto the terrace of the house and see this landscape. It does not belong to me, and I feel indifferent toward it. But when I gaze into the distance on this painting, I sense an unfathomable bond with my father, as if I am looking through his eyes. No one will ever understand this, except us.

- Anatoli Gostev (Jr.)

To contemplation and the creation of painting about everyday things— the beauty of nature, the duality of life, the infusion of feelings into matter — Anatoli Gostev dedicated his entire creative life. When the artist looked upon this landscape for the last time, he carried it with him. To where, perhaps, there are other, breathtaking landscapes. But this view remains his eternal possession.

The Lyricism of Painting

Anatoli Gostev often spoke of the task of removing literature from painting, insisting that the craft should remain pure and free of admixtures. And so he created his masterpieces, maintaining that a painting should evoke only uplifting emotions, not narrate stories. The lyricism of painting is the feeling conveyed without words — and it is present in every work of the last painter.
