Verification is done using two files: the original work file (e.g., .pdf or .jpg) and its associated proof file (.ots). Together, these files cryptographically confirm that the work existed at the time of the blockchain entry via a Merkle proof, embedded in the structure of a Bitcoin block.

Timestamp — is a blockchain-recorded proof that a specific digital file existed at a particular time. A unique digital fingerprint (SHA256 hash) of the file is stored in the block — not the file itself, but its mathematical representation. This fingerprint cannot be altered without changing the entire contents of the file, making forgery impossible.

This is a digital fingerprint of a file. If you change even a single pixel or character in a PDF file, the hash will completely change. By comparing your file’s hash with the data in the proof file (.ots), you can prove that this exact file existed on the specified date and was recorded in the Bitcoin blockchain. The hash itself isn’t stored directly, but its inclusion is verified through a Merkle proof.

Anyone can verify the authenticity of the certificate and confirm that the original file existed on the specified date by following these steps:

• Go to any trusted service that supports OpenTimestamps
• Upload file(s) and receive automatic verification
