Night meeting with the Blue Angel
The painting “Night Meeting” was created by the Russian-born master Anatoli Gostev in 2021 as a sketch, a reflection on a future work that the artist did not have time to complete. The last works of the last painter.
Size: Height: 20 cm Width: 30 cm
A woman went out at night to fetch water and met an Angel. That’s how it was… I’ll reflect on her more and paint her in oils.
– Anatoli Gostev (1946–2022)
Impression of the painting.
Painting is a wondrous craft. Just a small scrap of paper — and yet the work is imbued with the thought that life in the nocturnal wasteland is harsh and unsettled. The night in the painting is deaf and impenetrable, pierced with a green glow like a hallucination, while in the corners lurks emptiness itself. The moon seems to beckon the woman to step outside, breathe in this nocturnal greenness, and at the same time, unhurriedly fill her buckets with water. The Angel, flying over the deserted land, is already hastening toward this living soul.
Here there is neither water nor light, except for the hovering moon and its bright visage. I shall descend to her and speak with her, so that we will not be lonely. Lonely and afraid in the dark, when the gloom hides the moon.
– so thought the Angel
Anatoli Gostev devoted his entire creative life to the process of creating painting through the prism of reflection on everyday things, beauty, and the duality of life. A photo of the beginning of the work has survived, showing how straightforward clarity gives way to suggestion, how details recede, focusing the viewer on the essential — the nocturnal, almost trivial encounter of the Angel with the woman.
Fascination with the painting’s theme.
It is striking how fascinated the artist was with this sketch. In conversations with his son, more often than with other works, he drew attention to this nocturnal incident of a woman’s encounter with an Angel. In the context of the sketch’s composition, he spoke of how the yoke on her shoulders creates the silhouette of wings behind the woman’s back. A suggestion of duality arises — which of them is the Angel, perhaps both?
One thing about the painting “Night Meeting” is absolutely clear — this small, dark scrap of paper is capable of illuminating any darkness and overcoming any fear.
