Amedeo Modigliani - the impoverished prince of fine art, "cursed by fate" Modi, a blessed explorer of souls.
During a childhood fever, he dreamed of the masterpieces of Italian artists and recognized his destiny. This starry-eyed boy embarked on the path of an artist before he was even 14. Amedeo was incredibly well-read; he knew history, philosophy, and could recite poetry from memory for hours. He loved Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, and knew Dante by heart.
Modigliani's painting as a fateful combination. Even while living in Paris, the artist starved and could have painted fashionable landscapes to earn money. Everyone knew Amedeo as a very proud, straightforward person who couldn’t lie or be hypocritical. And this was the reason for his failures. Even debuting at the Autumn Salon, the artist didn’t become fashionable – at that time, Cubism was in vogue.
We love Amedeo Modigliani for his search for the soul in humans, for his love of women, honesty, and aspiration to the heavens. His works are divine because he managed to find and depict the soul in each of them, even without painting the eyes.
Amedeo Modigliani's Painting Gallery - Portraits
Many of Modigliani’s portraits look like hallucinations from a mix of absinthe and wine: distorted proportions, rough brushstrokes, and small black “empty” eyes, as if cut out with scissors. According to Modigliani, such eyes symbolized an “inward gaze” – very much in the spirit of the maximal individualism of the artists of that time. An original and observant artist, Amedeo knew how to see the essence in a person.

Modigliani claimed that all his nude models were his lovers. His taste in women was quite varied, so besides local prostitutes, Modigliani, as is known, dated students and even the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. The paintings caused quite a stir, shocking even the “liberated” Parisian morals of the early 20th century. During the artist’s lifetime, the painting “Reclining Nude on a Sofa” caused a scandal and trouble with the police at an exhibition in Paris. In 2010, it was sold at auction for $68 million.

The Legacy and Value of Amedeo Modigliani's Works
Modigliani represents Expressionism, and his work cannot be attributed to any of the contemporary movements of that time, such as Cubism or Fauvism. During his lifetime, Modigliani and his works did not achieve success and became in demand only after his death. In recent years, the artist's works have repeatedly been sold for multi-million-dollar sums. “Portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne,” auctioned off in 2004 for $31.4 million. “The Beautiful Roman Woman” was sold on November 2, 2010, in New York at a Sotheby’s auction for $68.96 million.
‘Reclining Nude’ (Nu Couché), painted by Modigliani between 1917–1918, was sold at a Christie’s auction in New York on November 9, 2015, for $170,405,000, taking second place on the list of the most expensive artworks. The painting was purchased by Chinese billionaire Liu Yiqian.
‘Reclining Nude’ (Nu couché sur le côté gauche) by Amedeo Modigliani was sold for a record $157.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York in 2018. The work belongs to the same series of nudes painted on commission from Leopold Zborowski, who at the time paid the artist a salary of 15 francs a day.
